What's the most unusual reason you've heard for a couple getting divorced?
If I’ve learned anything in my 40+ years as a family law attorney, it’s that everyone’s situation is different, and it is not my job to judge whether someone's feelings or wishes are legitimate or not. But that doesn’t mean I need to represent everyone, either.
If you could give newlyweds one piece of legal advice to prevent future disputes, what would it be?
My mom gave me it when I got married: to not go to bed angry.
That depends on the room. For some rooms, it is wallpaper; for other rooms, paint. But it's more likely paint for me. However, if one loves wallpaper, I must say that my friend and acclaimed actress Melora Hardin’s wallpaper – “Storyboards by Melora Hardin” – are some of the most beautiful designs I have ever seen. www.melora.com
What's the funniest or most bizarre asset a couple has fought over?
Believe it or not, sharks and a shark tank.
If you could write one new law about marriage or divorce, what would it be?
You have to have counseling before you get married, and you have to have counseling before you can file for divorce unless there's domestic violence involved.
What is your favorite dinner spot in Los Angeles?
The Grill on the Alley in Beverly Hills – just delicious and a great atmosphere.
What's the best reaction from someone who just finalized their divorce?
She had a party, and I was the guest of honor.

Which celebrity divorce case do you wish you could have handled?
Paul McCartney v. Heather Mills
If marriages came with a user manual, what's one tip you'd insist be included?
Pick a great lawyer and therapist.
What's one thing you wish more people understood about divorce?
Divorce law is not like “Perry Mason,” “LA Law,” “Ally McBeal,” or “Law and Order.” Divorce takes a lot longer; people don't confess on the stand, and much of it is very time-consuming and involves a lot of tedious work.
What is on your travel list this year?
The Galapagos Islands and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland.
What are your favorite linens?
I don’t have a favorite, per se, but my dear friends recently praised Boll & Branch linens.
Do you have any rituals or superstitions before heading into a tough case?
I used to have my lucky red Valentino suit—which I bought on sale! I always wore that suit, but then I became scared to wear it to court, fearing it might have lost its winning power. It has been a long time since I have done that.
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be, and would you seek their advice on love or law?
I have been asked this question many times, and my answers differ, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Golda Meir, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and, at the top of my list, God. But if I had to pick one today, it would be Abraham Lincoln. And I would ask ol’ Abe how he would solve the political issues of this country today and how he might unite us.
How do you decompress after a particularly tough or bizarre case?
I watch Hallmark movies! XXOO

What is your favorite thing to do on a Sunday in Los Angeles?
I often love to go on walks with my beloved Hurley (my cocker spaniel rescue dog who rescued me!)
What's the most common misconception people have about working with a divorce lawyer?
People wrongly believe if you have a good lawyer, you can always win.
If you could give one piece of advice to your younger, just-starting-out-in-law self, what would it be?
Be patient while you work your butt off!
What are the most common misunderstandings couples have about dividing real estate in a divorce?
Too often, couples don't think about the capital gains taxes. If you have a real estate portfolio, you must be very careful of tax issues, especially if the assets have been depreciated.
Have you seen trends in divorces related to the housing market's ups and downs?
Yes. In a bad housing market, folks often defer their divorce because they want to ensure they can get the highest amount for their home.

What are you watching on TV now?
“Blue Bloods,” “The Good Doctor,” “The Voice,” and, of course, my beloved Hallmark Movies!
What’s the oddest item in a house a couple has fought over?
I know I said before that it was sharks and a shark tank! But I also recall … wait for it: a vacuum cleaner!
Can you share an example where renovating a home led to a couple's divorce?
Yee, it is common for people not to get along when dealing with renovating; it will likely cost more that way, too. Then again, I've known of couples whose marriage improved as they were fixing up their place.
Have you ever seen a case where one party sabotaged a house sale out of spite?
Yes, sadly, it’s not uncommon.
What's your advice for couples co-owning real estate post-divorce?
Get ready to cooperate, communicate, and be aligned with each other. It takes work.
How do you handle situations where both parties are deeply attached to their home for different reasons?
You have to figure out who will buy out the other, and when two people are that interested, the price that one is willing to pay is often above market.
What role do home appraisals play in divorce, and have they ever caused a significant dispute?
Yes, appraisals have often caused significant disputes. Ultimately, the parties will need to agree. Otherwise, the Court will order that the home be sold, and the market will decide.

All my food lovers, I've stumbled upon a culinary treasure right in the heart of West Hollywood that I have to share with you! Welcome to Stella, where dining out is transformed into a vibrant celebration of food and sophistication!
As you step inside, you're immediately enveloped by an ambiance that feels like a chic cocktail party thrown by your most stylish friend. The decor is an artful mix of modern chic and old-school Hollywood glam—perfect for those moments when you just need a gorgeous setting to complement your evening.
Stella has taken over the beloved old Madeo space in the heart of West Hollywood. This spot has transformed what we knew and loved into something spectacularly new. With two bars, one upstairs and one downstairs, you will want to try both pre-dinner. Upstairs is quieter, and the downstairs seating is much more festive.
Let's explore Stella's menu. Start with the charred octopus, a dish as tender as it is flavorful, served with a tangy lemon aioli that perfectly accentuates the smokiness. The beet and goat cheese salad is another must-try, offering a fresh and earthy contrast with its mix of candied walnuts and balsamic reduction. I am a big Crudo fan, so in my opinion, you must try at least one. I had the Merluzzo and the Carpaccio di Branzino, and yes, I will be back for more.
Moving on to pasta, Pappardelle with smoked Sea Urchin won my heart. That was all I had room for, but I heard the Peking duck and Bistecca Taglita are scrumptious.
All this was washed down with the perfect martini and a fab bottle of Barolo.
So, whether you're reminiscing about old Madeo memories or looking to create new ones, Stella is the place to be.
