What is your favorite restaurant for dinner in Los Angeles?
I can’t pick just one… Capo, Citrin, Funke & Nobu Malibu
What inspired you to venture into the world of winemaking?
I fell in love with fine wine while studying at Sotheby’s in London after college. I find many parallels between the masterful strokes of fine art and the artistry and science of making wine.
Paint in Los Angeles and wallpaper in Napa Valley
What is your favorite architectural style?
I love it when a building has a sense of place and a personality of its own. For our winery, we chose a traditional European feel; our house in Napa Valley is an updated Victorian cottage, and our place in Santa Monica is contemporary and fits well at the beach.
If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be, and which wine from your collection would you pair with the meal?
I would love to have dinner with my dear father, who passed away when I was five years old. We would open a bottle of Colgin “IX Estate.” I think he would love what we are accomplishing today.
If you could describe your winemaking philosophy in three words, what would they be?
Perfume, freshness, minerality.
What's your favorite wine region (aside from your own) and why?
Burgundy because of the elegance and ethereal nature of the wines. Their dedication to distinctive vineyard sites was one of the catalysts for creating Colgin Cellars.
Can you share a particularly challenging obstacle you've faced in your winemaking journey and how you overcame it?
Wildfire has been the biggest challenge in recent years, and we have worked diligently with everyone in Napa Valley to protect our properties.

If you could collaborate with any other winemaker, living or dead, on a new wine project, who would it be and why?
Josephine Tychson, the 19th-century owner of our Tychson Hill property and the first woman to build a winery in the Napa Valley, has been a constant inspiration. I would love to have her to dinner today and open the 2002 Colgin “Tychson Hill,” named in her honor.
Favorite thing to do on Sunday in LA?
I love to take a long walk along Santa Monica Beach in the morning and go see the current exhibitions at LACMA in the afternoon.
What's the most unexpected food pairing you've discovered that complements one of your wines perfectly?
Many people think Cabernet only goes with red meat, and that is very limiting. We have a talented and creative Culinary Director at Colgin Cellars, and he made two dishes that really stand out to me. Vadouvan Roasted Carrots with Labneh and Quinoa, which we paired with 2009 Colgin “IX Estate,” and Oven-Roasted Salmon with Pistachio-Basil Crust and White Bean Ragout, which we paired with 2017 Colgin “Tychson Hill.”
I try to stay away from too many carbs, but I love the muffins at Bellwood Bakery.
If you could only drink one wine for the rest of your life, which wine would it be?
That just would not be possible. The greatest thing about wine is selecting a different one every night!
What place is on your bucket list for travel this year?
My husband, Joe, and I, along with dear friends, are going to Japan for the amazing culinary experiences, art, and culture.

How do you stay creative and innovative in an industry with such a rich history and tradition?
Traveling to other wine destinations is a big inspiration for me. I always pick up a few new ideas for Colgin Cellars.
What are your favorite linens?
If you could travel back in time and give your younger self one piece of advice about winemaking, what would it be?
Be very patient and always respect Mother Nature, who can be friendly, fierce, and sometimes generous.
What's your favorite non-wine-related hobby or activity?
Playing with our two dogs- Coton de Tulears, named for Burgundian vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin and Mazis Chambertin.
What's the most unusual or unique wine-related gadget or tool you own?
I have a set of six antique sterling wine collars that were used to designate wine varietals before labels existed. I wear them as bracelets!
What are you watching on TV now?
The best series I have seen in the last year is “Drops of God,” which is a fabulous family drama involving wine.

Can you share a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or releases from Colgin Wines?
Our newest creation is a wine called Jubilation. It is approachable in youth and a wonderful introduction to our vineyards and winemaking style.
If you could change one misconception people often have about wine or winemaking, what would it be?
Wine is meant to bring pleasure to life, to bring people together around a dining table. Drink what makes you happy, and don’t worry if it doesn’t pair perfectly with the cuisine. But be sure to serve your wines at the proper temperatures. Most people drink white wine too cold, which mutes the aromas, and red wine too warm, which mutes the complexity.
What's the weirdest food pairing you've ever tried with one of your wines that surprisingly worked?
We had dinner at the Ritz Carlton in Abu Dhabi, and one of the courses was camel bacon paired with Colgin “Cariad”- a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
What is your favorite wine-related tradition?
Sending a toast around the table like a large wave. You must look the person in the eye as you toast, or it is seven years of bad sex! I learned this 30 years ago from Margrit Biever Mondavi.
What's the quirkiest piece of wine-related memorabilia you own?
A 13th-century stone relief of grape pickers originally from Burgundy that I purchased at a Sotheby’s London auction. It weighs a ton!

Irv's Burgers, Where Every Bite's a Delight!
Hey there fellow burger enthusiasts, this is one to take advantage of. I recently rediscovered this culinary gem that stole my heart (and my taste buds) – Irv's Burgers in the heart of West Hollywood! Picture this: You walk into Irv's, and instantly, you're hit with the mouthwatering aroma of sizzling beef and toasted buns. The ambiance? Think classic diner meets retro vibes, with colorful booths and vintage signage setting the stage for a burger bonanza. I always get takeout, as it could not be easier with the pickup window. Like a roadside burger joint!
Now, let's talk burgers – trust me, they're the real deal! I opted for the "Irv's Classic," and oh boy, was it a flavor explosion! The juicy patty, cooked to perfection, nestled between two pillowy buns, was like finding your dream home! And don't even get me started on the toppings – crisp lettuce, ripe tomatoes, tangy pickles, all topped off with a secret sauce that'll have your taste buds doing a happy dance! Consider this a bespoke burger; the add-on menu is super impressive. Please order the fries; you always need them with a burger. For the people who need vegan or turkey, check that box as well.
So, if you're ready to embark on a flavor-filled journey that will leave you craving more, do yourself a favor and head to Irv's Burgers. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
